Tread Lightly!

When considering motorized recreation, many outdoor groups immediately see conflict rather than conservation. Yet, the honest truth is that virtually all outdoor recreation—from hiking to hunting—relies on motorized transport to access wild places. As access to capable off-road vehicles increases, so does the impact on our public lands, often driven by inexperienced and uneducated users. This presentation will challenge the conventional view that protecting motorized access is incompatible with environmental stewardship.

Our Core Mission: Conservation

Tread Lightly! is a national nonprofit organization committed to protecting access to motorized recreation on public lands. While this is our focus, it does not mean we are solely interested in getting more vehicles into wild places. On the contrary, Tread Lightly! is fundamentally a conservation-focused organization. We provide essential education on trail use and ethics, conduct mitigation and rehabilitation work, and execute large-scale cleanups. With increasing ecological damage, we are rapidly evolving and pivoting our strategies to ensure sustainable use for the future.

Session Highlights:

This session will highlight our evolving strategies and showcase how we are adapting to meet changing environmental demands:

  • Modified Education: New ways we are reaching the growing segment of uneducated off-road users to instill responsible recreation ethics.

  • Ecosystem Partnerships: Strategies to increase collaboration and project work that directly support and stabilize the ecosystems surrounding motorized trails.

Building and Assessing More Accessible Trails; Beneficial Designs

Todd Ackerman, Beneficial Designs

Providing accurate Trail Access Information (TAI) is about more than meeting ABA Standards and FS Guidelines - it's about providing critical information users of all abilities need to determine which trails meet their specific needs. It helps us to create a more equitable and accessible trail network. Join Todd and other Network participants as we learn more about the High-Efficiency Trail Assessment Process (HETAP) - a tool for expediting the process of collecting trail data and increasing the accuracy of that information. Todd will also address how data collected by HETAP can be used.

Outdoor250

Outdoors250 is Arizona’s way of celebrating the nation’s 250th birthday by getting people outside and connected to the places that define us. As part of the nationwide America250 initiative, Outdoors250 uses Arizona’s trails and birding opportunities as an invitation for people to explore the state, discover new places, and build a deeper relationship with the outdoors. Join Neil Large from the Arizona Office of Outdoor Recreation for the next Elevate AZ Trails Live Lunch Presentation at noon on February 23 to learn how this effort is coming together and how you can get involved. This is a great opportunity to collaborate with partners across Arizona, grow a stronger statewide outdoor network, and help turn everyday trail users into passionate outdoor advocates.
